Motorcycle crash in Punta Gorda claims life of young driver

By Aaron Humes: A motorcycle accident late Sunday night on the Thomas Vincent Ramos Highway resulted in the death of a 22-year-old driver, Brenton Cofius, and left his passenger, Carl Mangar, hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. near the “Dollar Sign” landmark at the entrance to Punta Gorda, when authorities reported that Cofius lost control of his motorcycle while traveling northbound. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree, leading to severe injuries for both men.

Cofius and Mangar were quickly transported to Punta Gorda Hospital, where Cofius succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight. Mangar remains hospitalized, with his condition being monitored as investigations into the accident continue.

When asked if police were pursuing the motorcycle prior to the crash, Police Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith indicated that there was no information to suggest that a police chase was involved. “I had specifically placed that inquiry to Commander south and he informed me that they have no information suggesting that so far,” Smith said.
