By Horace Palacio: Christmas night in Dangriga was shattered by the sound of gunfire as a 23-year-old man was brutally murdered in the Lakeland area.
James Aranda, a laborer from Rivas Estate, was walking on Sabal Street around 9:10 PM when he was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle. The assailants, dressed in dark clothing, fired multiple shots at Aranda, striking him and causing him to fall to the ground. They then approached him and fired two fatal shots into his head.
A passerby rushed Aranda to the Southern Regional Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:25 PM.
Police investigators have recovered five expended shell casings and one slug from the crime scene. Their preliminary investigations suggest that Aranda was specifically targeted by the two suspects, who remain at large.
Authorities are currently pursuing leads and are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence.
