By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has warned motorcycle riders to remember that they are not alone on the roads.

It follows the untimely death of an unnamed man in a collision with a dump truck over the weekend. Around ten Saturday morning at the entrance to Spanish Lookout, the truck turned right on the Iguana Creek Road, when a motorcycle traveling at high speed attempted to overtake it on the right side and crashed directly into the truck’s back wheel.

When police arrived on the scene, they found the driver dead on the street. They also observed that the motorcycle had no valid insurance, license sticker, or license plates.

Previously an accident occurred in Belize City and took the life of Michael McKenzie; police are still investigating since they say it was McKenzie who ran the stop sign at the corner of King Street and East Canal and ran into a bus.

According to the Commissioner: “Many times motorcycle drivers believe, or they operate in such a way as if, the rules of the road don’t apply to them – they overtake on the wrong side; they see vehicles coming and still overtaking. Several infractions they commit on these motorcycles and it is a danger to their health. And that is the reason why we are seeing that a number of persons are dying as a result of motorcycle accidents, and so we want to encourage motorcycle riders to please adhere to the rules of the road, and if they do it will help to save their lives.”

He added that the main reason for these motorcycle accidents is drivers who don’t pay attention, as with the incident at Spanish Lookout: “Inattentive or they make the wrong move… shows clearly where the rider was not paying attention, the truck was already turning into the compound and he just went straight into the vehicle. Had he been paying attention he would have seen the truck was turning and he could have avoided that accident but that’s the issue we are seeing.”
