By Zoila Palma: Traffic fatality statistics presented at a Belize Police Department CompStat meeting on January 22 show notable reductions in road deaths across all regions of the country.
According to the data, the Northern Region recorded a 31 percent decrease in traffic fatalities, while the Western Region saw a 22 percent reduction. The Southern Region also experienced a 31 percent decline, and the Eastern Region reported a 15 percent decrease.
Police officials attributed the improvements to enhanced traffic enforcement measures and increased public awareness efforts aimed at promoting safer driving practices.
However, the data also revealed that motorcycles remain the most frequently involved vehicle type in fatal traffic incidents, continuing to be a major concern for law enforcement.
The Belize Police Department reiterated its call for all road users to obey traffic laws, exercise caution, and take personal responsibility to help ensure public safety on the nation’s roadways.
