By Aaron Humes: Renick Chavarria and Jael Guzman did not make it home from a party in Orange Walk after apparently running into a bus. They were both riding a motorcycle when they hit head-on and died on the Philip Goldson Highway Saturday night.
According to police, the bus driver reported that the motorcycle appeared to drift into his lane, despite his efforts to avoid the collision by pulling to the right. The driver managed to pull aside but was unable to prevent the crash.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, stated that police currently do not know if the victims were intoxicated, but post-mortem examinations and blood tests are planned to determine their status. The investigation also suggests that the motorcycle was speeding at the time of the accident. It’s confirmed that one of the riders was wearing a helmet, while it is unclear if the other had one.
The victims are related, though authorities have not disclosed their specific relationship. The driver of the bus has been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP), and the case file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further directives.
