Mother says goodbye to one son as another is freed of gun charge

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A mother had to part ways with one son on Tuesday while embracing the other, who was released after both were arrested for firearm and ammunition charges.

Fernando Miguel Alvarado, 24, and his younger brother Manuel, 22, were jointly charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Due to the absence of a Magistrate in Orange Walk, the brothers were transported to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, arriving just before a blackout on Coney Drive delayed their arraignment until after 3 p.m.

The charges stem from an early morning incident on the Orange Walk By-pass Road, where police found the brothers with a loaded 16-gauge shotgun. Fernando, the older sibling, pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to six years for the shotgun and 18 months for the ammunition. His prior conviction for a firearm offense influenced the severity of the sentence.

Manuel, who claimed he was merely the driver of the motorcycle and not the owner of the gun, pleaded not guilty. With Fernando taking responsibility, the charges against Manuel were dropped, and he was released.
