Cancer doesn’t just affect the body. It reaches every part of a person’s life – from family to career, to the additional emotional stress and weight of medical bills. Such is the case for young Belizean mother of two, Gianna Cocom.
Gianna Cocom was diagnosed with cervical cancer late last year and has since been engaging in fundraisers, raffles and food sales to raise the funds for her treatment. This week, Cocom took to social media to plead for assistance. On July 11th, Cocom shared that she would be unable to complete her round of cancer treatments due to lack of funds. She shared that her latest completed chemotherapy and radiation sessions amounted to just over $20,000 Bzd, and she now has to find additional funds in order to complete her sessions in Merida.
Cocom wrote “ I am at a point in my life where I don’t know if I should continue or just quit… I’m broken in pieces because I have no more funds.”
According to the HPV Information Center, cervical cancer is the second most frequent cancer among Belizean women. Approximately 34 women are diagnosed each year in Belize, with approximately 25 women per year succumbing to the disease. For Gianna, the fight against cancer is one worth fighting – for her loved ones, and especially for her two young girls.
