By Aaron Humes: Former Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow has received a proclamation in the United States Congress for the silver (25th) anniversary of his debut album “Shyne” and recognizing his legacy in both the arts and politics.
Barrow issued thanks to Democratic Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, New York congressman Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries’ written citation says Barrow “exemplified a lifelong commitment to the advancement of Belize through public service, cultural advocacy and global engagement,” with particular emphasis on sustainable development, social equity and national pride. The album “Shyne” was released in 2000 and was certified platinum, while also earning several Grammy Awards.
On his return to Belize, Barrow was appointed Music Ambassador by Prime Minister Dean Barrow and began working in the Mesopotamia division, rising to become its area representative, twice Leader of the Opposition, and Leader of the UDP.
Barrow wrote, “Over the years, I’ve developed relationships with political leaders, both Republicans and Democrats, for the betterment of Belize. The power of music, Hip Hop in particular, brings people together all over the planet. I will continue to serve humanity through both entertainment and governance.”
The former begins with a long-awaited follow-up album tentatively called “The Honorable Shyne,” while the latter may have to wait a while as he is out of the House of Representatives.
