Moses “Shyne” Barrow presents at African American Film Critics’ Awards; celebrating creativity and passion

By Aaron Humes: The recent African American Film Critics’ Awards (AAFCA) this past Sunday brought together some of the film industry’s most talented individuals, highlighting the power of storytelling and the importance of passion in the arts. Belize was represented by Moses “Shyne” Barrow, who presented the award for Best Documentary to the team behind Hoops, Hopes and Dreams, joined by award-winning director and writer Ryan Coogler, known for his groundbreaking films like Black Panther and Creed.

Coogler, 39, recently made headlines for breaking the record for the most Oscar nominations for his film Sinners. The Oakland, California native spoke with Shyne, making sure to compliment him as he “loved and grew up to my music.”

“What stuck with me most,” Barrow reflected on social media, “was when he accepted his various AAFCA Awards, he remembered the teacher who read an assignment he wrote and told him he needs to go write screen plays in Hollywood, now here he is. It’s an ode to his tenacious pursuit of his storytelling passion from humble begins in Oakland but equally compelling is the testimony of the people that believe in us along the way. We all need that teacher, that friend, that parent who sees the greatness within us more than we sometimes see ourselves. The journey to Oscars, Grammy’s, Emmy’s and other accolades is not the journey at all, it really is all about loving your craft and sharing your Devine [sic] gift with the world.”

Barrow himself encourages “all creatives and people in general, love what you, make your impact, the objective is to add value to humanity through art. Being a creative is quite difficult, especially in Belize, the world over, some of our greatest creatives never make it to the Oscar’s or the Grammy’s, however I firmly know, your day will come, if not this life the next, timing is everything, embrace the process, grueling and long suffering as it may be, only the marathon runners win the race of life…I was privileged to be in the presence of such craft masters. Greatness inspires me.”

Barrow also congratulated “my brother and friend Jason Aidoo on receiving the Vanguard Award and all the other award recipients.”
