By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition in Jamaica, Mark Golding, recently sat down with Moses “Shyne” Barrow on his visit to Jamaica.
Barrow reminded that today’s opposition leaders may very well become tomorrow’s prime ministers, depending on the will of the voters.
He explained that he had closely with former Prime Minister of St. Lucia, Allen Chastanet, to host the “Leader of the Opposition Conference,” an initiative aimed at empowering opposition leaders throughout the region. Its purpose was “to strengthen the Office of the LOO as having strong Opposition provides the people with Government oversight and a viable alternative so no administration will take its mandate for granted,” he stated.
Golding’s People’s National Party (PNP) doubled their seats in Parliament at last year’s election, though still lost to Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Expressing well wishes to Golding, Barrow stated, “It benefits the Jamaican people greatly to have a Prime Minister and a Leader of the Opposition who are both performing at optimum levels to move your Country forward.”
