By Aaron Humes: Police in Belize City are investigating the shocking shooting of Gion “Gizmo” Bernard, also known as Gaiyon Gomez, which occurred this morning on Castle Street. Bernard, a 40-year-old paraplegic man, was found lying motionless near his wheelchair shortly after gunfire was reported in the area.
Around 11:30 a.m., residents of Castle Street heard a single gunshot. Witnesses reported seeing two individuals fleeing the scene shortly thereafter. The police arrived promptly to find Bernard with apparent gunshot wounds to the head. His body remained on-site as investigators began to gather evidence and interview local residents for any valuable information.
According to initial reports, Bernard had been a fixture in the neighborhood, often seen navigating the streets in his wheelchair.
Gion Bernard was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival shortly after 12:30 p.m. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as police continue their investigation.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as police continue sifting through leads.
Bernard had multiple run-ins with the authorities, starting in 2008 with the robbery of Doony’s Store; alleged rape of a call-center co-worker; multiple attempted murders, including the 2012 incident on Freetown Road with Jermaine ‘Horse’ Garnett of which he was acquitted; and others. He was left a paraplegic following a shooting incident in 2016.
