By Zoila Palma: During cabinet’s meeting held on January 13, 2026, Ministers discussed traffic enforcement following the reporting of more than 3,300 traffic accidents across Belize in 2025.
Cabinet took note of consultations conducted with key stakeholders and expressed its support for the issuance of special permits for the transportation of wide loads on national highways.
This along with recent amendments to road safety regulations, is expected to enhance overall road safety and help reduce the high number of traffic accidents recorded last year.
Cabinet also approved increased support for the Department of Transport to strengthen its enforcement capacity.
The approval includes the addition of more Transport Officers and vehicles, allowing the Department to carry out enforcement operations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These measures aim to address the rising number of traffic violations and accidents occurring nationwide.
