More than 1,800 residents to benefit from new water security project in Belize

By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize has launched a BZ$10 million initiative aimed at improving water security in rural communities, with the official rollout of the Securing Water Resources through Solar Energy and Innovative Adaptive Management (SEAM) project on April 24 in Punta Gorda.

The project, funded through the Adaptation Fund’s Large Innovation funding window, will target communities in Boom Creek, Dolores, and Otoxha in the Toledo District, as well as Copper Bank in the Corozal District.

More than 1,800 residents are expected to benefit over the project’s five-year lifespan. The Protected Areas Conservation Trust will oversee the initiative, while the Ministry of Rural Transformation will lead implementation efforts.

Key components include the design and construction of solar-powered hybrid water systems to provide safe and sustainable household water supplies, alongside ecosystem restoration and livelihood diversification efforts.

These include reforestation, watershed rehabilitation, and agroforestry, with a focus on expanding opportunities for women. The project also seeks to strengthen governance by building the capacity of local water boards and encouraging equitable participation in water management.

Government officials, including Ministers Oscar Requena, Orlando Habet, and Osmond Martinez, addressed the launch, joined by senior ministry representatives and community leaders.

Approved in 2025 at the Adaptation Fund’s 45th Board Meeting in Bonn, Germany, the SEAM project is being positioned as a model for scaling climate-resilient water solutions across vulnerable rural areas in Belize.
