By Zoila Palma: Today, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) announced the successful return of over 150 Maya artifacts that were on loan to the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) as part of the internationally acclaimed exhibit Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed.
This landmark exhibition, launched in 2012, was the result of a partnership between SMM and NICH that concluded in September 2024.
During its run, the exhibition was hosted at museums in Minnesota, Denver, Boston, San Diego and several other major cities across the United States, introducing millions to the rich cultural heritage of the ancient Maya civilization.
“The artifact collection, ranging from ceramic vessels and jade ornaments to stone tools and other ritual objects, has been safely repatriated to Belize after more than a decade abroad,” NICH said.
NICH noted that their return marks a significant milestone in international museum collaboration and reflects a shared commitment to preserving and showcasing Belize’s cultural legacy.
“The artifacts have been returned to the Institute of Archaeology, under the auspices of the NICH, where they will continue to be conserved, studied, and protected as part of Belize’s national patrimony,” NICH added.
NICH expressed appreciation to the Science Museum of Minnesota and all partner institutions for their stewardship of the collection and for helping bring global attention to Belize’s archaeological heritage.
The National Institute of Culture and History also expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the Belize Customs & Excise Department, the Ministry of Finance, and the Belize Airport Authority in facilitating the safe and secure return of the artifact collection.
