By Aaron Humes: Another American national on vacation in Belize was caught at the Phillip Goldson International Airport in possession of imported marijuana, 19.78 grams. Arrested and charged is 37-year-old Lee Whyms III, a carpenter/investor of Los Angeles, California.
In court, Whyms III pleaded guilty to the importation of controlled drugs and told the sitting Senior Magistrate, “I was not aware of the laws here because it’s legal where I come from.”
Ignorance is no excuse to the law and so the sitting Senior Magistrate explained to Whyms III that because he brought the marijuana from the States into Belize, the charge is much more severe than if he were caught on the streets of Belize with the same amount. The offense of importation carries a similar penalty to drug trafficking.
However, since this was Whyms’ first conviction for drugs in Belize, the court was able to impose just a fine of $2,000 and cost of court to be payable forthwith since he is not a Belizean. In mitigation, Whyms III asked the court to take into consideration the fact that this was his first drug conviction and that not knowing better about the Laws of Belize, he purchased the drugs home from someone and brought it to Belize. According to Whyms III, in California, residents are allowed up to 28 grams on their person.
Whyms III came to Belize five days ago on vacation. He had a wife and daughter back home. The marijuana was found in a soap dish during a search of his luggage at the Phillip Goldson International Airport. Whyms III entered Belize from Los Angeles through Dallas on board American Airlines Flight 539.
