By Breaking Belize News Staff: A domestic dispute dating back to May 2025 has landed 24-year-old Chad Jones, originally from Dangriga, before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a charge of common assault against his then common-law wife.
Jones appeared unrepresented in Court #5 on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to the charge. However, the sitting Magistrate deferred sentencing until Thursday, October 23, explaining that she needed to review the full facts of the case before proceeding.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on May 12, 2025, when the victim, a 22-year-old woman, reported to the Gender-Based Violence Unit that an argument with Jones turned violent after she questioned his whereabouts. She alleged that Jones, a security guard at the time, punched her twice in the face, causing swelling.
Police say the victim was issued a medico-legal form for hospital evaluation, but no medical document was ever submitted, which delayed charges. It wasn’t until September 25, when the victim revisited the police station, that the matter was pursued—leading to Jones being charged this week.
In a surprising twist during Tuesday’s arraignment, Jones’s brother told the court that the complainant was his brother’s ex-girlfriend, who allegedly burned some of Jones’s belongings, including new work clothes.
Pending sentencing, the Magistrate granted bail of $1,000 plus one surety of the same amount, with the condition that Jones must not contact the virtual complainant or any members of her family.
Jones, who recently moved to Belize City, is scheduled to return to court Thursday, October 23, for sentencing.
