By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Melissa has intensified into a Category 5 storm as it slowly tracks west-northwestward toward Jamaica, bringing the threat of catastrophic winds, flooding, and storm surge to the island late Monday night and early Tuesday.
As of 2:00 p.m, the hurricane’s eye was located about 145 miles (230 kilometers) southwest of Kingston, moving at a slow pace of 3 mph (6 km/h).
Forecasters from the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) report that Melissa is packing maximum sustained winds of 175 mph (280 km/h), with even stronger gusts.
The storm is expected to make landfall over Jamaica tonight, cross southeastern Cuba by Tuesday night, and move over the southeastern Bahamas on Wednesday.
Although slight fluctuations in intensity are possible, meteorologists warn that Melissa will remain an extremely powerful and life-threatening hurricane throughout its path.
Hurricane-force winds extend 30 miles (45 km) from the storm’s center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach outward up to 195 miles (315 km).
Residents in Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas are urged to finalize preparations and follow all emergency advisories, as the storm poses a severe risk of widespread damage, flash flooding, and dangerous coastal surges in the coming hours.
