Monkey River Coastal protection project restores hope for residents

By Zoila Palma:  Residents of Monkey River are seeing renewed hope following the implementation of a coastal protection project aimed at reversing years of erosion, Minister of State Osmond Martinez shared.

Martinez said the community, once heavily affected by shoreline loss and displacement threats, is now benefiting from a government-led seawall initiative designed to stabilize and restore the coastline.

“Monkey River… is no longer one of despair, but one of hope and renewed energy,” Martinez stated.

The project, executed in two phases at a cost of over $331,000, is already mitigating further land loss and protecting homes. Additional works, including dock repairs, have also been undertaken to improve access for residents and visitors.

“This vital restoration project is actively restoring the shoreline to protect the community from the devastating effects of erosion,” he said.

Martinez noted that the intervention marks a shift from past approaches, emphasizing that the government has prioritized in-place solutions rather than relocation.

“For the first time in many years, the people of Monkey River can enjoy the waves of the sea,” he added.
