By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A money dispute in San Jose Village exploded into a night of escalating confrontations that ended with a 22-year-old construction worker losing part of his ring finger to a bite, an injury certified as grievous harm, and a man is detained as police investigate.
According to the Belize Police Department, the complainant reported that on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m., while at home, he got into a fight over money with a man known to him. According to his report, the man then called his family, and a group arrived and threw stones at his residence while provoking him. One person in the group, he reported, brought two machetes to the scene, but police arrived and everybody left.
The retreat lasted half an hour. At about 11:00 p.m., according to the report, the group returned, throwing pint bottles toward him and hurling insults. One of the men was armed with a piece of iron approximately five feet long and entered the yard, where a fight ensued, drawing in members of the complainant’s own family.
During the fight, the complainant reported, he was struck on the left forearm with the iron bar. He defended himself and grabbed the armed man from behind, at which point, according to his report, the man seized his right hand and bit his ring finger, causing instant pain and profuse bleeding. When he let go, police officers arrived, for the second time that night, and separated them.
Checking himself afterward, the complainant found the small top portion of his right ring finger missing. He sought medical attention at the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was treated and discharged, and a doctor classified his injury as grievous harm. He requested court action.
Police recorded a statement from the complainant, and a 19-year-old San Jose Village man has been detained in connection with the matter.
