By Zoila Palma: Miss World Belize Faith Edgar has made history on the international pageant stage after being named one of the Top 6 finalists in the Americas and Caribbean region for Miss World’s Beauty With a Purpose (BWAP) competition.
Edgar is representing Belize with her “Smiles for Belize” project, an initiative focused on improving access to preventive dental care and oral health education.
Following the announcement, Edgar described the achievement as a significant moment for Belize. “Tonight, Belize made history,” she said. “Being named a Top 6 in the Americas & Caribbean for Beauty With A Purpose is an honor that means more to me than I can put into words.”
Edgar said her passion for dentistry has grown significantly over the past five years and eventually led her to develop Smiles for Belize.
“Five years ago, I fell into the field of dentistry almost unexpectedly. Today, I am studying to make it my profession, and for the last two years, I have been building Smiles For Belize not knowing where it would take me but knowing that the need was there,” she said.
Through the initiative, Edgar has worked to bring dental services and education to communities across Belize. “That is why we brought fluoride clinics to 10 schools, joined mobile dental clinics to reach communities where they are, distributed dental health kits, and organized food drives to help families understand that a healthy smile is connected to so much more than brushing your teeth,” she said.
Edgar says that the project has reached more than 6,000 patients.
Reflecting on the journey, Edgar said the project has reinforced her commitment to dentistry and community service. “This project has stretched me, humbled me, and reminded me why I chose this path in the first place,” she said. She added that representing Belize while advocating for a cause connected to her future profession is already a meaningful achievement.
“To be able to stand on this stage representing Belize, while advocating for a cause that I am passionate about and studying to dedicate my professional life to, is truly enough for me. Everything beyond that is a blessing,” Edgar said.
She also told Belizeans, “I am here to represent you. I am here to advocate for you. I am here for you.”
The Miss World final is scheduled for this Saturday, where Edgar will continue representing Belize on the international stage.
