By Breaking Belize News Staff: Miss Universe Belize pageant host Chelsea Muñoz has spoken publicly about the confusion that unfolded during the competition, taking responsibility for her role while explaining how unclear results and procedures contributed to the highly discussed moment.
Muñoz said she was initially “shocked and nervous” when asked to co-host the pageant alongside Virginia, but accepted the opportunity despite having limited preparation time.
Muñoz explained that she and Virginia worked with their friend Manuel Flores Jr. to prepare for the event, but wished they had more time. She said they were making edits and changes to the program backstage even as the pageant was taking place. “Despite the short preparation time, I said yes,” Muñoz said.
Addressing the moment when an incorrect delegate was initially announced as part of the Top 5, Muñoz said the hosts were given what appeared to be the official results on a tabulation sheet containing delegates’ names and scores. They were instructed to announce the first five names but were unaware that the actual Top 5 appeared on a separate list on the same document. Muñoz said she mistakenly continued reading and called the sixth delegate, Caleigh Rose West. “That was my mistake, and I immediately took responsibility, apologized and called it a ‘Steve Harvey moment,’” she said.
Muñoz later learned that West was, in fact, one of the rightful Top 5 finalists, meaning five of the six women who had been called to the stage were the official finalists. She also addressed confusion during the Q&A segment, explaining that duplicate questions had been placed in the bowl after selected questions were not being removed. “There were mistakes that night, mine included, and things that could have been prevented with clearer communication, preparation and procedures,” Muñoz said, while stressing that her comments were intended to acknowledge what happened and help improve future events rather than blame individuals.
Despite the controversy, Muñoz said her heart remains with all eight delegates, praising the sisterhood she witnessed backstage and congratulating the newly crowned Miss Universe Belize, Caleigh Rose West. “There were mistakes. There were lessons. Now, I hope there can also be grace,” she said.
