The Miss Universe Belize executive has finally responded after 72 hours of public criticism over the grand final, which saw a top six announced instead of a top five and repeated questions during the Q&A segment.
Reports also emerged of backstage problems, including a lack of privacy for contestants.
National Director Destiny Wagner ignored repeated requests for comment before taking to Facebook to blame the mistakes on human error.
The Miss Universe Organization then issued its own statement, and it pointed squarely at the local team.
According to the statement, individuals who were not members of the team or jury were tabulating scores from papers handed to them. The organization said its own instruction had been that no one outside the jury should be calculating scores.
“The local production team justified that this was how events had always been handled in here,” the statement reads.
“This created a chain of errors that ultimately caused the presenters to become confused about the Top and announce incorrect information, resulting in the confusion witnessed by everyone.”
The organization said it assumes full responsibility regardless of whose error it was, and apologized to Belize.
