Miss Mexico crowned Miss Universe following weeks of controversy

By Zoila Palma: Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, claimed the Miss Universe 2025 crown on Thursday, November 20, during the global pageant held at Impact Challenger Hall in Bangkok, Thailand.

She emerged victorious from a field of more than 130 contestants representing countries and territories around the world.

This year’s competition embraced the theme “The Power of Love,” celebrating unity and empowerment. Bosch succeeds Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark, who made history last year at the first Danish Miss Universe.

Her win follows a month of escalating controversy that placed intense scrutiny on the Miss Universe Organization.

On November 4, Bosch became the center of a viral livestream after pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly scolded her for allegedly refusing to take part in a social-media photo shoot.

Bosch denied the accusation, but the confrontation intensified when Itsaragrisil continued chastising her, prompting several contestants to walk out in solidarity. In a later statement, Bosch said the executive had disrespected her, claiming, “He called me dumb.” MUO President Raul Rocha Cantu also weighed in, criticizing Itsaragrisil’s behavior and offering his support to the contestants.

The turmoil deepened in the days leading up to the pageant.

Judge Omar Harfouch resigned, alleging the existence of an unauthorized “impromptu jury” tasked with selecting 30 finalists without the involvement of the official judging panel. In a series of social-media posts, he raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and accused an unofficial panel of being influenced by personal relationships with contestants.

Further disruptions followed as two more judges withdrew: former French football star Claude Makélélé for personal reasons, and Princess Camilla di Borbone delle Due Sicilie, president of the selection committee, who stepped down the following day.

Despite the chaos surrounding the event, the competition proceeded to its finale, culminating in Bosch’s emotional crowning moment.
