Ministry of Rural Transformation, Korea and UNICEF partner to improve quality of healthcare in Otoxha Village

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize has significantly improved the quality of primary healthcare that is being provided to the residents of Otoxha Village.

Otoxha is another remote community on the southwestern edge of the Toledo District that needs more stable access to water and electricity.

Often times, medical teams from the Ministry of Health & Wellness travel to look after the healthcare needs of the residents and are constantly challenged to find clean and safe water for proper sanitary practices.

The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government in collaboration with the Republic of Korea and UNICEF through their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene program joined efforts to address this issue.

Ministry officials repaired the infrastructure of the Otoxha Health Post.

They also constructed an elevated stand and installed a ten-thousand-litre water storage tank, upgraded a nearby well with a solar-powered, submersible pump, and constructed a waiting area for patients, which also has solar lights for nighttime medical care.

This access to potable water is also available to residents who can use the standing pipe next to the new waiting area.
