By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) today announced the advancement of its efforts to modernize Belize’s building construction industry through the introduction of building codes.
The Ministry proposed to adopt the International Building Code (IBC), which is the cornerstone of a suite of industry codes developed by the International Code Council (ICC). The Ministry also took the extra step to modify and adapt the IBC to Belize’s unique environment. This was done with the voluntary participation of the MIDH, Central Building Authority, Association of Professional Architects of Belize, Association of Professional Engineers of Belize, and utility companies. The result of three years of their valuable time is the Belize Building Code, which was built on the globally accepted foundation of the IBC.
In its recent session, Cabinet approved legislative amendments to the Belize Building Act, which will introduce the 2024 Belize Building Code as the base document for future building construction in Belize.
Over the next year, before its official launch in 2026, the MIDH noted that it will spearhead a public campaign that will sensitize building industry professionals, stakeholders, and users of the 2024 Belize Building Code, empowering all with tools that will elevate building performance in the areas of public safety, public accessibility, and building construction quality.
The MIDH expressed optimism to the public’s excitement and energy as it continues to put Belize’s building quality and safety as a top priority and paramount importance.
