By Zoila Palma:  On January 27, 2026, the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour began formal engagement with the International Labour Organization following the recent restructuring of the Ministry.

Minister of Immigration Kareem Musa and Chief Executive Officer Tanya Santos met for the first time with Director of the ILO Caribbean Office Joni Musabayana and his team during a virtual meeting that reviewed Belize’s efforts to strengthen its labour market. Senior ministry officials also participated in the exchange.

Minister Musa outlined plans for the implementation of the Decent Work Country Programme, describing it as a clear roadmap to guide labour market development and policy coordination.

Discussions also included future technical support from the ILO, including collaboration through the EU funded PROSPER Project.

Areas of cooperation include labour law reform, occupational safety and health, local economic development, labour market statistics, skills development, social protection, and child labour prevention.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the ILO to strengthen labour governance and advance decent work across Belize.
