By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs reiterated a zero tolerance policy regarding corporal punishment and all forms of violence against children in state care, following an incident reported on July 15 involving alleged violence against a minor at the New Beginnings Youth Development Centre.

Medical attention was provided immediately, ensuring that the minor received the necessary care. Following this, the child was escorted to the Hattieville Police Station on July 16 to provide an official statement regarding the altercation.

The family of the minor has been notified and is currently engaged in discussions with the Ministry as the investigation proceeds.

In response to the incident, the Ministry has initiated internal disciplinary measures against the officer involved. The employee has been placed on leave and is barred from returning to the facility, with administrative procedures already underway to terminate employment.

The New Beginnings Youth Development Centre is undergoing a comprehensive reform process, aided by international partners. The reforms aim to enhance rehabilitative services and implement robust policies reinforcing the Ministry’s stance against corporal punishment.
