By Zoila Palma: Last week, the Department of Human Services, under the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, hosted its Court Access Training in Caye Caulker bringing together 57 Children Services Officers and Community Rehabilitation Officers for two days of intensive, hands-on judicial preparation.
The training opened with a powerful ceremony attended by national leaders and members of the judiciary, including:
Thea Garcia Ramirez, Minister of Human Development, Family Support & Gender Affairs
Mme. Justice Antoinette Moore, Justice of the High Court of Belize
Anthony Sylvester, SC, Attorney General of Belize
Enkhnasan Nasan-ulzii, UNICEF Head of Office – Belize
The Ministry says that representing children in court is not just about showing up.
It is about:
Preparing strong, accurate Social Inquiry Reports
Giving confident and professional testimony
Understanding legislation and court procedures
Protecting children’s rights at every stage of the process
The training was facilitated by the Chief Magistrate of Belize, Deborah Rodgers and the Director of the Belize Family Court, Shanti Morrison, reinforcing the strong collaboration between the judiciary and social services in safeguarding children.
“From arraignments and bail hearings to appeals and variation of orders, our officers sharpened their skills to ensure that when they stand before a magistrate or judge, they stand ready,” the Ministry said.
The training was made possible through the generous support of UNICEF Belize, whose partnership continues to strengthen Belize’s child protection system.
