Ministry of Health warns of increased dengue risk during rainy season

By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Health and Wellness is warning the public that the rainy season can increase the risk of dengue transmission as stagnant water creates breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The mosquito commonly breeds in water collected in containers and other items around homes and communities.

Dengue can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, can be fatal. Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and skin rash.

The Ministry is urging anyone experiencing symptoms, particularly signs of severe illness such as bleeding or difficulty breathing, to seek medical attention immediately.

The Ministry is encouraging residents to take preventive measures by regularly checking their homes, yards, workplaces and communities for mosquito breeding sites. Residents are advised to empty, cover or remove containers that collect water, dispose of discarded tires, bottles and cans, keep drains and surroundings free of garbage and excessive vegetation, and use mosquito repellent as directed.

The public is also encouraged to wear long-sleeved clothing, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon when mosquitoes are most active, and ensure doors and windows are properly screened.
