By Aaron Humes: In 2024, Belizeans were producing fewer offspring per the latest data from the Belize Health Information System (BHIS), released in October.

Belize recorded only 5,791 births last year, the lowest number since 1984. Fourteen percent of those births were to adolescent mothers between the ages of 10 and 19. The gender split was nearly even, with boys (2,918) making up just over half of all newborns; girls accounted for 2,873 live births. 1.3 percent were twins.

In the pandemic year of 2020, Belize recorded 7,025 live births, which dipped to 6,663 the next year. The number rose again to 7,059, then dropped to 6,355.

Cayo District (1,511) recorded the plurality of live births, followed by the Belize District at 1,330; 853 in Orange Walk; 835 in Stann Creek, 674 in Corozal, 581 in Toledo, and seven to unknown or foreign-born mothers.

The five most common male baby names, in order, are David, Jacob, Jayden, Johan and Aiden. Girls were most commonly named Maria, Mia, Helena, Anna and Eva, in that order.
