By Zoila Palma: On March 16, 2026, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) received a donation of three laparoscopic towers from the Surgical Outreach for the Americas (SOfA).
The Surgical Outreach for the Americas is a nonprofit organization that supports the expansion of safe surgical care.
This was achieved through the coordinating efforts of Dr. Greg Arana, MD, a Belizean-born surgeon based in Florida and an active member of the diaspora.
The Ministry says that the Laparoscopic Equipment will enhance medical services as it offers several advantages: it is minimally invasive, patients experience less pain, it represents less days in the hospital and a lowered risk of complications.
“The objective of this collaborating effort between SOfA and the MOHW is to develop the capacity of local surgical teams through training, equipment support, and institutional planning to ensure that minimally invasive surgery becomes a standard, self-sustaining component of surgical care in public hospitals of the Ministry of Health and Wellness,” the Ministry explained.
Once the training is completed for the relevant staff the services will be available at all regional hospitals of the MOHW.
