By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) held a workshop on Visual Assessment Triage (VAT) for healthcare workers, in collaboration with the Interamerican Development Bank and Salud Mesoamerica Initiative.
Basic Health International facilitated the training in VAT, including an online course followed by a face to face training done in Belmopan last week.
VAT is a method of screening for cervical cancer that involves examining the cervix with a magnifying device and applying acetic acid to detect abnormal cells.
“Every district will now be able to continue with the training of their peers (Obstetrician Gynecologists, General Practitioners and Registered Nurses) in VAT,” the Ministry of Health and Wellness said in a statement posted on social media.
“Women will now have increased access to follow up services, at their district health locations.”
The MOHW called on women 25 to 65 years old to get screened regularly or as advised by their doctor for cervical cancer. The MOHW said women in this age range should visit their nearest health facility for more information and services.
