By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) is actively monitoring 12 cases of Measles in Belize.
Acting Dep Director of Public Health and Wellness Dr Laura Friesen says that the Ministry is urging the public to get the measles vaccine to reduce exposure.
“Our vaccination programs including the measles vaccine have been working for years we haven’t always achieved our ideal vaccination rates which would be over 95 for example especially around covid we did have a small dip because you know there was logistical issues as well however for example last year in 2025 in the whole country we had a vaccination rate for the MMR2 of 91% so that means that we are, we are covering a large majority of our children that are vulnerable,” Dr. Friesen said.
The Ministry is encouraging anybody with children over the age of 1 who has not yet been vaccinated to visit their nearest health center and get them vaccinated to reduce their risk of getting sick.
