By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness has extended its condolences to the family of Jenny Pinelo on the passing of her baby.
In a statement, the Ministry clarified that the reported lack of platelets did not contribute to the baby’s death. Between January 15 and January 22, some 76 units of platelets were delivered to the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) upon request, including 41 total units on January 21 and 22 requested on behalf of Jenny Pinelo. All requests for platelets for Jenny Pinelo were honored immediately.
The Blood Bank of Belize assures the public that it has no shortage of blood, blood products, supplies, or reagents to screen the blood; nonetheless, “It should be noted that the blood issued to patients is not necessarily the blood units donated by the respective replacement donors; the shelf life of a blood unit is 90 days,” per the Ministry.
The Ministry explains that the blood bank’s purpose is to screen and store blood for availability, and every effort is made to replace used blood. A medical technologist is always on call, and blood drives are conducted countrywide to maintain stock.
