By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) informed of a case preliminarily diagnosed with measles on April 24, 2026.
This person is a 19-year-old resident of the Toledo District with recent travel to Guatemala.
The Ministry says that all isolation and quarantine recommendations for the patient and known contacts are being followed. A ring vaccination exercise and community outreach were immediately started and are ongoing.
The Ministry further reminds the public of the growing outbreak of measles in neighboring Guatemala with 5,100 cases reported since December 2025.
The MoHW urges the public to get vaccinated against measles to protect themselves and their families. Vaccination prevents measles and measles complications.
Who should get vaccinated?
- Children: Two doses as part of routine immunization at 12 and 18 months of age.
- Unvaccinated individuals (over 18 months old): Two doses, given one month apart.
- Individuals who received only one dose: An additional booster dose is recommended.
- Persons unsure of their vaccination status: One dose is advised.
Travel Guidance
- Travelers (12 months and older): Ensure vaccination at least two weeks prior to travel.
- Unvaccinated travelers under 1 year old: Consult a healthcare provider for guidance.
The MoHW is committed to ensuring that the public is kept informed and updated in this regard at all times.
