By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration has issued a statement regarding the case of Sebastián Pop, a Belizean involved in legal proceedings in Guatemala. Pop’s situation has garnered attention following his removal from the village of Otoxha, Toledo District two years ago.

Following legal proceedings in Guatemala, Pop was convicted of femicide, defined as the killing of a woman or girl, in particular by a man, and on account of her gender.

The Ministry has instructed the Embassy to explore any additional legal recourse available to him through his legal team. The Ministry statement explained that the Embassy of Belize in Guatemala has been in ongoing communication with Pop’s lawyer, ensuring that necessary documentation is provided to facilitate his legal process.

The Ministry further highlighted the troubling circumstances surrounding Pop’s removal from Belize. They emphasized their commitment to addressing the situation through established diplomatic channels while adhering to international law. The Ministry has vowed to vigorously pursue Pop’s repatriation to Belize.

It follows the apparent removal of Joseph Budna one week ago in Orange Walk Town, which he claims was facilitated or at least approved by the Government and Police Department – a charge which they deny and which is under investigation.
