By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) and the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) have issued a joint statement following a productive meeting held on December 4, underscoring their commitment to enhancing the welfare, professional growth, and working conditions of teachers across the nation.
Key agreements from the meeting include advancing work on Head of Department (HOD) allowances, streamlining the Teacher Transfer Grant approval process, and producing a temporary cross-level licensing pathway for teachers. Both parties also plan to formalize payments for teachers covering additional credit hours and embed teacher welfare programs within the Education Sector Plan for 2026–2030.
In terms of innovation, the Ministry and the BNTU will launch a digital platform designed to address teacher concerns and ensure access to all benefits and allowances for eligible educators. Additionally, they are keen on exploring Early Childhood Education Programs in collaboration with Walden University.
The MoECST has pledged to maintain ongoing dialogue and collaboration with the BNTU, committing to quarterly follow-up sessions to monitor progress on these initiatives.
