Ministry of Education inaugurates state-of-the-art Itz’at STEAM Academy

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On May 11, 2024, the Government of Belize through the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art Itz’at STEAM Academy.

The Itz’at STEAM Academy is the first Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) secondary institution in Belize, Central America and the Caribbean.

This institution is fully owned by the Government and people of Belize and designed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL).

“Itz’at” translates to ‘the wise one in Mayan.

The name celebrates the sage, the learned, and the artistic, and pays homage to our ancestors who were the pioneers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

“It stands as a testament to Belize’s rich multicultural tapestry, and our commitment to inclusive education.

Itz’at will serve as a hub for the expansion of STEAM education across Belize. Under the Skills for the Future programme, STEAM pavilions will be constructed at 6 other secondary schools,” the Ministry noted.

Itz’at will have a maximum capacity of 300 students by 2026 with an intake of approximately 75 students each year.
