By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has extended heartfelt gratitude to teachers nationwide, recognizing their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to shaping the nation’s future.
In a statement, the Ministry wished educators a “Happy World Teachers’ Day,” celebrating the crucial role they play in fostering learning and development across Belize.
World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on 5 October, commemorates the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The landmark Recommendation sets benchmarks for teachers’ rights, responsibilities, training, recruitment, employment, and teaching conditions.
A complementary Recommendation for higher-education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997. The day, celebrated globally since 1994, highlights teachers’ transformative impact while prompting reflection on the support needed to fully harness their talent and vocation.
This year, UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI) jointly called on governments and partners worldwide to strengthen collaboration within the teaching profession.
