By Zoila Palma: Today, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Economic Transformation, in collaboration with COSEFIN, is hosting a virtual regional workshop on the potential impacts of El Niño 2026–2027 across Central America.
The workshop focuses on the anticipated effects of El Niño, including drought, water shortages, agricultural losses and the resulting pressures on economic activity and public finances.
Osmond Martinez, Minister of Economic Transformation and Pro Tempore President of COSEFIN, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of strengthening regional preparedness and resilience.
“We must strengthen fiscal planning, improve coordination among institutions, and explore financing mechanisms that will allow us to respond effectively to climate-related risks. Regional cooperation and the exchange of experiences are essential to improving our preparedness and resilience,” Martinez said.
Representatives from Belize’s Climate Finance Unit, Sustainable Development Unit, and National Meteorological Service, along with other regional stakeholders, also participated in the workshop.
The Ministry says that Belize remains committed to continue working with Dr. Federico Rivera Romero, Executive Secretary of COSEFIN, to strengthening regional cooperation, promoting knowledge-sharing, and advancing preparedness to better anticipate and respond to the impacts of El Niño.
