By Zoila Palma:  During the festive season, it is customary for Belizeans to hear “pop-shots” all around and even fireworks when the clock strikes midnight.

But CEO in the Ministry of Defence Francis Usher warns that all those require a permit.

“So those fall under the Dangerous Goods Committee or the chair of the Dangerous Goods Committee. That actually falls under the police department so they would be the ones to either issue a permit or say whether they are safe or not and who can import that kind of, well we refer to as dynamite or palomitas or pop shot, or even fireworks you do need a permit to get those. What is the punishment or charge for being found with them without the proper permit or licenses? I am not certain that would be more in their realm. But, yes I can say that it does fall under the dangerous goods which has input also from experts in the BDF but they are not the chair of the board,” CEO Usher told 7News Belize.

CEO Usher also warns of the dangers for children and even adults.

“I personally know people that have gotten major injuries to their hands because one exploded in their hand. I know of people that got burned and also that fireworks impacted them in their body and they got seriously injured. There is an old saying in Belize, nothing happens till something happens and it is all fun and games and exciting until there is a major injury and it’s the fact that these things do have the potential to cause severe injury and so you do need to ensure that those who are in possession or those that do have it are properly trained and are mature enough to handle it and do have the requisite licenses,” he added.

CEO Usher reminded that there is a reason these items are controlled and require permits and licenses.
