By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation recently met with representatives from the Wildlife Conservation Society to discuss ongoing conservation efforts and opportunities for deeper collaboration in advancing Belize’s Blue Economy agenda.
Chief Executive Officer Beverly Wade met with WCS Country Director Nicole Auil Gomez and Regional Director Dr. Jeremy Radachowsky to review progress on several initiatives currently supported by the organization.
Discussions focused on Marine Protected Area management, fisheries enforcement, gender inclusion in fisheries, and the protection and management of freshwater ecosystems across Belize.
During the meeting, WCS presented the Ministry with a copy of the Gender-Transformative Chalupa Card Game, a community engagement tool designed to promote conversations on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion.
The activity was developed following gender-transformative community engagement training facilitated by POWA in 2024 under the Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas Initiative.
The Ministry noted that the card game is intended to encourage dialogue among community members of different age groups while helping participants reflect on social norms, equity and inclusion in conservation efforts.
