Ministry of Agriculture representatives visit CRESAP-funded egg production facility in Orange Walk

By Zoila Palma:  Today, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture visited a chicken egg production facility (Highland Brown) in the Orange Walk District.

The operation utilizes a pasture-based system, with 2,500 adult laying hens and 1,600 birds currently in the rearing stage; it is part of the CRESAP-funded project.

The Ministry says that the visit confirmed that this is a sustainable project (socially, environmentally, and economically); they maintain administrative records, and the pasture-based model promotes animal welfare.

Medication use is kept to a minimum—particularly regarding growth promoters and production-enhancing drugs—with the ultimate goal of achieving clean production.

The Ministry says that this model project can be used by others wishing to replicate it in their own areas as the Ministry provides training and detailed information on the production model.
