By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and New Growth Industries, through the Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture Project (CRESAP), in collaboration with ORISA, successfully launched a series of six trainings on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of thrips in Sweet Pepper Production.
The Ministry says that the training is designed to guide farmers through IPM principles and practices across the full production cycle, from seedling stage to harvest, combining theoretical instruction with hands-on field application.
The first session of the series was held in Springfield, Cayo District, and was facilitated by Extension Officer Moises Perez. This inaugural session focused on the theoretical component of Integrated Pest Management, providing participants with a foundational understanding of IPM concepts and their application throughout the various stages of sweet pepper production, from seedling establishment through to production. A total of 15 farmers attended the session.
The session introduced participants to the core principles of IPM and set the framework for the practical sessions to follow, which will take place in an operating greenhouse dedicated to sweet pepper production.
The training series consists of six sessions, delivered at two-week intervals following the first session. Subsequent sessions will be practical in nature, conducted on-site at the greenhouse used for sweet pepper production.
The Ministry noted that 15 farmers participated in the first session.
The theoretical foundation established in Session 1 will support farmers’ understanding of the practical, greenhouse-based sessions to follow.
The next session, on Biological Control, is scheduled to take place in two weeks.
