Today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Central Execution Unit (CEU) of the Ministry of Finance, held a brief symbolic ceremony to show appreciation and recognition to Belize’s hardworking farmers.
As part of the grant component under the Sustainable and Inclusive Belize (SAIB) Program, MAFSE has commenced the first disbursement of nearly BZD $1.5 million to 549 farmers, including 119 women. These farmers, having met the program’s selection criteria, will each receive an initial payment of BZD $2,000 to procure agricultural equipment and inputs that align with sustainable and climate-smart practices.
Once farmers have demonstrated the proper use of this first disbursement, a second payment of the same amount will be issued. Additionally, all selected farmers will benefit from ongoing training and capacity building throughout the remaining two years of the project.
In addressing the many challenges facing the agriculture sector such as the spread of infectious pests and diseases including citrus greening, fusarium in sugarcane, and screw worms in livestock the Ministry emphasizes the need for aggressive, simultaneous, and comprehensive action.
Future phases of the project will expand support to an additional 1,000 farmers, who will also each receive BZD $4,000, along with assistance to 20 producer groups and 40 MSMEs in the agriculture sector bringing the total project investment to approximately BZD $5 million.
