By Zoila Palma: Today, the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson gave remarks for the closing session on training for wild bee swarm management and handling at Central Farm, Cayo District.
The training session is the last in the series of training sessions offered for extension officers and private beekeepers who will be certified in bee management services.
Attendees included CEO Servulo Baeza and Senior Adviser Digno Polanco, as well as Extension Officers and the beekeepers who will be practising bee management.
After the ceremony, Minister Ferguson and CEO Baeza distributed equipment and tools which will be handed over to the participants as a part of the training program.
The wild bee swarm management training sessions came about after Ministry of Agriculture personnel found themselves overwhelmed with calls from the public about bee swarms in urban or dwelling areas all over the country.
“With limited resources, the Ministry found it difficult to handle all the calls coming through, and thus a cabinet paper was prepared to streamline management of wild bee swarms, which occur more often in summer months when bees forage for food. Under the new system certified bee swarm handlers will be able to respond to calls from the general public for a fee, while ministry personnel will answer for public buildings and spaces,” the Ministry explained.
