By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Cooperatives Department and the Department of Youth Services in Toledo, successfully hosted a two-day training on Pitahaya and Soursop tree management from July 23rd to 24th, 2025, in the Toledo District.

The Ministry says that the focus is to promote diversification and build technical capacity in the management of non-traditional fruit crops such as Pitahaya and Soursop, both of which are seeing increased demand across the country.

The training was officially opened with remarks by Enrique Rivas, National Fruit Tree Program Coordinator, based at Central Farm.

Over the course of the two days, a total of 108 farmers participated in both theoretical sessions and practical, hands-on training.

Topics covered included agroecological management, pruning, pollination, pest and disease control, and other key practices essential for improved productivity and fruit quality.

Training sessions were led by Israel Pech and Lilian Suntecun, technicians from the Research Unit at Central Farm, who delivered both the classroom and field demonstrations.

The Ministry noted that participants will apply the knowledge and techniques gained to enhance their production and improve the overall quality of their Pitahaya and Soursop crops, contributing to food security, economic resilience, and agricultural development in Belize.

The Ministry thanked Denzil Castillo, District Agriculture Coordinator at the Toledo Agriculture Station, who worked tirelessly alongside his team to ensure the successful coordination and logistics of this important event.
