By Zoila Palma: On December 11, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture hosted an end of year review and 2026 outlook session for Global Environment Facility projects in Belize.
Present were Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of State Alex Balona and CEO Servulo Baeza.
The GEF-6 “Integrated management of production landscapes to deliver multiple global environmental benefits”
The project area is in the Belize River Watershed.
It’s objective: Mainstream biodiversity conservation and sustainable land and water management into production landscapes in Belize; and delivery of multiple Global Environmental Benefits through sustainable production and improved value chains for key agricultural and forest products from the Belize River Watershed. The project team includes the Agro-processing unit.
Immediate next steps include:
- Agronomy section – Emergency seed bank/Germplasm bank; nursery expansion
- Cayo: Establish sheep silvopasture model farm; honey* as a value chain with focus on standardization and marketing
- Livestock Central Farm: Strengthen pasture management and genetic improvement
- Agro-processing unit: Refurbish building; upgrade/enhance processing equipment
- Belize: Genetic improvement for cattle within the BRW; tilapia* as a value chain to youths and vulnerable communities
- South-south exchange: Explore Ramon nut in Peten, Guatemala
