By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise issued a statement saying that it is aware of a highly defamatory and fake social media news post which seeks to implicate the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai in alleged local and trans-border criminal activity.
“The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise of Belize takes this opportunity to categorically and emphatically deny any and all such unfounded allegations, and to indicate that this is yet another clear attempt by fake news media conspiring with detractors and political agents of the opposition UDP, to tarnish the good name and reputation of the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise of Belize, at a time when the opposition UDP desperately needs to distract the public from its ongoing internal power struggles and absolute state of political disarray,” the statement said.
In addition, Minister Mai will “seek and exhaust all legal recourse against those persons who are discovered to be behind this brazen and cowardly attack against the good name and reputation of the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise.”
Minister Mai reminds everyone of the laws of defamation:
“absolutely no one is entitled to speak or publish information about another which is factually untrue or false, or cannot be proven or verified to be true or false in a court of law. And even though someone has chosen to make false allegations or false statements about someone, whether verbally, in printed form, via electronic means [such as photographs, video or audio] or otherwise electronically, against someone, this fact in itself, or the fact of repeating the false statement, does not make the false statement change its intrinsic false character to become true. And furthermore, anyone who choses to reproduce or republish the defamatory of libelous statement or article, in effect adopts the false, defamatory and libelous statement as his own, and is or shall be equally liable under the law as the original fabricator or creator of the false, defamatory and libelous statement.”
Minister Mai also reminded the public of the cybercrimes act which criminalizes the act of “cyber-bullying”.
Minister Mai further said that the public should not get carried away by attempts made by agents of the UDP to create fake posts.
