Ministry of Agriculture conducts Wild Swarm capturing beekeeping training

By Zoila Palma:  The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, through its Honey and Beekeeping Coordinator Miguel Huertas, in collaboration with Fernando Orellana of Bee Natural, successfully conducted a 3-day Wild Swarm Capturing Beekeeping Training at the Golden Stream Field Station in Golden Stream Village, Toledo District from February 11-13.

This training was organized in partnership with Ya’axché Conservation Trust and supported under a project by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Ministry noted that the program focused on building the capacity of local farmers to safely rescue and manage bee swarms within their communities.

A total of 10 farmers were trained and certified, along with two Ya’axché Extension Officers.

Participants not only strengthened their technical knowledge and practical skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the economic and environmental benefits of beekeeping. The training highlighted how beekeeping can enhance livelihoods while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Farmers from San José, San Antonio, Silver Creek, Indian Creek, Golden Stream, and Aguacate Village took part in this initiative, further strengthening community-based bee rescue efforts and expanding beekeeping as a viable enterprise in southern Belize.
